River Thurso Halkirk to Thurso

A beautiful day for a river walk. From Halkirk to the river’s mouth at Thurso. Easy walking at start and finish, more difficut in the middle, lots of gorse and tufted grass to navigate – total distance 14 kilometres. Also cows with calves, so needed to be alert. One ewe with lambs stood her ground. Close to the single track Inverness to Thurso and Wick train. River Thurso is a prime salmon river, I met a professional Ghillie who had fished this river for 40 years, he was supporting a client visiting from Sheffield. Apparently not a good day for fly fishing, too many reflections in the water due to the sun. Longest walk for a while, so enjoyed a pint of lager shandy in the “Eh Comm Bar” – The oldest bar in Caithness”. Duly refreshed caught the bus back to Halkirk.
